Irish National Road Race Championships 2012

Slightly belated … Lydia and I (Louise) raced the champs this year, placing 4th and 7th. It was held on a really good hard racing circuit in Clonmel in lashings of lovely Irish rain.

Halfway through the event Lyds and I were in a group of 12 which had split  from the rest of the field. The momentum of the group was lagging, I let the wheel go and Lydia got a gap. She completed half a lap alone, getting over the hills and forcing the rest of the field to chase. This made a further selection of eight riders. On the penultimate climb this group also split, with Lyds making the split along with two full-time professional riders (Olivia Dillon and Siobhan Horgan, both ex-national champions) and the up-and-coming Mel Spath. All the efforts took their toll – not much energy left in the legs for the finish, Lydia coming 4th in the final sprint (below). An excellent debut however in her first National RR Champs! I got worked over by two teammates in the group of four behind, placing 7th in the finale. All in all a successful day out, and LMNH retaining some UCI points to boot!

  1. Firstly, WELL DONE ladies!!
Considering the field, that’s an excellent performance and you must be very proud?!

(A small thing…due to the way blogs come through without individual identity…ie. Always from LMNHs…you need to tell us who’s writing the report if it’s to be in first person…otherwise it’s a guessing game as to who was riding with Lydia!!)
