Four of Team Mum were lucky enough to spend the last in a long run of bank holidays on Jersey, where we had a go at the St Helier Town Centre criterium followed by a road race between St Ouen and St Peter.
It was a great trip; a very warm welcome from Tony and Jemima at Big Maggy’s and excellent organisation by Velo Sport Jersey made it all very easy. The crit was superb; narrowing streets, tight corners, speed bumps, lots of spectators and live commentary (quite handy for those of us no longer at the pointy end of the race!). Jo had a phenomenal race, using her skills and experience to great effect (riding the bumper of the lead car through the neutralised lap, curb hopping through the corners) to come in 4th behind the Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta podium. Anna hung on in the chase group to finish 16th, with Helen unlucky to be pulled out, having kept this second group in sight the entire race.
The road race was panning out well, with Helen and Anna the right side of a split on the hill, which saw a number of riders go clear of the bunch. Unfortunately, they then got on the wrong side of a startled horse and rider and were forced to slow, losing the leaders. There was no hope of getting back on, but the pair managed to catch and eventually pass two riders who were dropped on the final hill to finish 10th and 11th. Jo held her own in the chasing group and got 15th.
Great racing, great coffee and mechanical assistance at Big Maggy’s, and even time for spot of tourism (and an insight into life on Jersey during WWII). A really good weekend!
