Team time trials and jubilations

On Sunday 8th May Charlie, Anna, Jo, Lydia and I headed Lavenham in Suffolk to take part in a UK first: a women’s 6-up team time trial. I may have said this elsewhere but thanks to Gino Howe for organising it.

For those of you with a PHD in maths, yes there were only 5 of us who took part. Pan was sadly unable to join us this time. Let’s hope she managed to fit in some library time instead.

If anyone doesn’t know what a team time trial looks like then this is what it should look like:

But this is how I like to imagine it:

The start sheet was shiver inducing. London Dynamo had put forward a team of TT experts, including the record breaking 25 mile 3-up time trial athletes. Motorpoint, who are winning national races with frightening regularity – well done girls. Then there were the more-than-zippy Zappi girls. The awesome Aw Cycles ladies, and some of the cream of local racing in the form of the Surrey League team. In a word: yikes!

We had a scare when Lydia and Charlie called to say they had stopped for a coffee and were now maybe a bit…errr… lost, and then an even bigger scare when the next call was to report a puncture. Yes, cars can get punctures too. Luckily Lydia has some car fixing skills up her skinsuit sleeve. They arrived with minutes to spare so without a warm up we trundled to the line, with our main strategy being let’s all finish together.

I won’t give a bend by bend account of the race, but let’s just say we all worked and we all finished together. Only one person said ‘please never again, don’t make me do that ever again.’ I guess that was successful for a first team time trial.

I don’t know quite how this happened but here’s the result:

  1. Dynamo won (despite 2 of the team taking a break to look at flora and fauna in a ditch along the way – without this biology trip I think they may have melted the tarmac).
  2. Motorpoint, clearly not tired from winning the national juniors and women’s race on Saturday, took second. Whatever pasta they are eating, I want some!
  3. Who do you think took third? My goodness, I am still not sure I believe it – we did! Whooo-hoooo!  Pats on backs all round.

The finishing times for all the teams were pretty close so good job to everyone who took part, thanks to the marshalls, and hope to see everyone back again next time. Definitely need more of these events.
