Nigel Stephens is riding for LMNH as 2nd claim member. He is planning to ride TTs for Team Mum and compete in the ERRL for Finchley RT.
He came to cycling 35 years ago and rode seriously from the age of 15 to 25. Mainly a tester, his PB was a short 20 for 10 miles (no aero bikes / helmets back then). After qualifying as a doctor and starting a family he didn’t have time to put the miles in and switched to running Cross Country and a few marathons. He did manage to become the silver medalist at Middlesex Cross Country Championships. Not so shabby!
He picked up cycling again after developing a stress fracture in his lumbar spine and hasn’t looked back. The photograph above shows him winning the Barbados Masters Road Race Championships in 2009. Last season was also pretty good for Nigel: wins in LVRC races, podiums in the ERRL, top fives in sporting TTs and an impressive 4th place in LVRC National TT champs.
His goals for season 2011 are: good placings in National 10, 25 and 50 mile championships, to win age his group in the National Masters TT Champs and to get his 1st Cat licence. Blimey!
If Nigel was a DS in a grand tour, he says his dream team would consist of:
Jens Voigt – the best and hardest man on the road
Richie Porte – best new talent
Philippe Gilbert (although really a 1 day man)
So now you know!
